The League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) was established in 2012 when OnGameNet (OGN), a South Korean cable television channel, took the initiative to organize a professional League of Legends league specifically for Korea. This move aimed to capitalize on the growing popularity of esports in South Korea, a country already renowned for its dominance in competitive gaming.

During the early years of the LCK, SK Telecom T1 established themselves as an early powerhouse and even won Season 3 of the World Championship in 2013. As the competition evolved, LCK became internationally recognized and became part of the Mid-Season Invitational and LoL Worlds. Korean teams like T1, KT Rolster, and Gen.G continued dominating the scene.

Since then, South Korea has established itself as a breeding ground for top-tier talent, garnering millions of fans worldwide who want to see fast-paced action that rivals Western professional League of Legends gameplay seen at the LEC or LCS.

LCK 2024: Format

The LCK season is always divided into two splits: the Spring and Summer Splits. After each seasonal split, there's a major tournament: MSI in May and LoL Worlds in October/November. 

Over three or four months, ten teams compete to become the League of Legends champions in Korea. The top two LCK teams auto receive an automatic invitation to the Mid-Season Invitational, held in May, while the teams earn Championship Points to qualify for LoL Worlds.

Group Stage

• Ten teams compete in a double round-robin format
• Each team plays 18 matches, all Bo3.
• The top six teams advance to the LCK Playoffs.
• 1st and 2nd teams receive automatic byes to the Semifinals.

Playoffs

• Double-elimination bracket format
• All matches are Bo5, including the Grand Finals.

LCK 2024 is the nineteenth season of the league, set to begin on January 20, 2024. Ten teams will compete to become the champions of Korea; in the Playoffs, teams will earn Championship Points that will decide if they get invited to LoL Worlds in October.

LCK 2024: Teams

During the offseason, all LCK teams had plenty of musical chairs and roster changes. T1 was one of the only teams to maintain their 2023 roster coming into the new year.
